This Week In Business put of benzene (1° and 2°) from petroleum reached 3.88 billion pounds in 1963, an increase of about 26% over 1962. Monthly output for the first six months of this year has exceeded that of 1963. According to the Tariff Commis sion's report, U.S. production of all crude products from petroleum and natural gas amounted to 35.12 bil lion pounds last year, about 7 % more than 1962's output. Production of all aromatic and naphthenic products increased about 1 1 % last year to 11.29 billion pounds.
In addition to benzene, U.S. pro duction of toluene and naphthalene increased last year, too. Toluene output was 2.74 billion pounds com pared with 2.40 billion pounds in 1962. U.S. output of petroleumderived naphthalene jumped from 167 million pounds in 1962 to 288 million pounds in 1963. Unlike ben zene, toluene, and naphthalene, pro duction of xylene decreased slightly. Output amounted to 2.36 billion pounds in 1963 compared with 2.50 billion pounds in 1962. Among the aliphatic hydrocarbons,

ethylene production scored almost a 2 0 % increase last year. In 1963, ethylene output was 7.52 billion pounds, up from 6.28 billion in 1962. U.S. production of butadiene reached a record high of 2.32 billion pounds in 1963, up from 2.14 bil lion pounds the year before, the Tariff Commission says. Propane production was 3.05 billion pounds in 1963 vs. 3.50 billion pounds in 1962. Total U.S. output of aliphatic hydrocarbons reached 23.83 billion pounds in 1963, up from 22.81 bil lon pounds in 1962.
