A Half Century

D

eveloped from an international symposium commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the discovery of transuranium elements, this volume honors the chemists, physicists, materials scientists, and engineers who were the pioneers of transuranium research in the 1940s. Opening with a comprehensive review by Glenn T. Seaborg of the discovery of transuranium elements and his perspec tive on the future of the field, the volume offers an outline of the discoveries of transuranium elements and of the chemical foundations of transuranium research, written by the pioneers themselves. The volume also emphasizes contemporary research with articles on nuclear chemistry and physics; spectroscopy, photophysics, and photochemistry; inor ganic and analytical chemistry; materials physics and chemistry; and solution and environmental chemistry of the transuranium elements. Contents • Historical Viewpoints · Materials Physics • Nuclear Physics and Chemistry · Materials Chemistry • Chemistry · Analytical Chemistry • Separations, Thermodynamics Lester R. Mores, Argonne National Laboratory, Editor Jean Fuger, European Institute for Transuranium Elements, Editor 700 pages (1992) Clothbound ISBN 0-8412-2219-3

Colin F. Poole received his Ph.D. in analyt ical chemistry from the University of Keele (U.K.) in 1975. After postdoctoral ap pointments at the University of Ghent (Bel gium) and the University of Houston, he joined the faculty of Wayne State Univer sity. His research interests include the ap plication of chromatographic techniques to environmental and biomedical problems, sample preparation technology, solvation models for chromatographic processes, and the chemistry of liquid organic salts. He can be reached at the Department of Chem istry, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI 48202. Salwa K. Poole received herB.S. degree from the University of Damascus (Syria) and her Ph.D. from Wayne State Univer sity in 1986. She is currently a research associate at Wayne State University per forming research in TLC, HPLC, GC, com puter-aided optimization of separations, food chemistry, and sample preparation technology.
