ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT, I S S U L I S , A F D A X I S 0 ACID CATALYSIS BY J O H g 31. ORT
It has been found that certain of the common amino acids accelerate the action of small amounts of hydrogen peroxide on dextrose and levu10se.~~’ Insulin under the same conditions has some retarding influence in the absence of the amino acids and is without much effect Then they are present. This paper is a report of further st,udiee by the oxidation potential method on the first, steps in the oxidation of these sugars. The additional effect of ultraviolet light is also considered. The procedures were similar to those of the former experiments and when the solutions were irradiated with ultraviolet light they were essentially as follows: K h e n the drift.s of reduction potentials in the solutions became relatively steady following the removal of dissolved air by nitrogen gas, ultraviolet light was admitted. After the potentials had reached a chosen value, 0.5 C.C.of a 0.03 per cent solution of hydrogen peroxide was added. Then the course of the reaction was followed by observing the drift of potentials. Since it was found that ultra\
