Undergraduates are invited to join representatives for breakfast to learn about graduate programs in the chemical sciences. Recruiters will be available 8:30–11:00 a.m.; the center will be open until 5 p.m. ACS staff will help you navigate the meeting program booklet and answer other questions. 9–10:30 a.m. *Effective Interviewing Techniques Workshop. This session will discuss interviewing styles and techniques for graduate school and for an industrial job with a B.S. degree. During a panel discussion, students will have the opportunity to ask questions of academic and industrial representatives. (Cosponsored by the ACS Committee on Corporation Associates and the Department of Career Services.) 10:30 a.m.–noon *Human Exposure Studies Symposium. This session will discuss human exposure to polycyclic aromatic compounds as well as exposures that took place after the September 11 World Trade Center collapse. noon–1:30 p.m. *Community Activities: Expanding Your Reach. Join us as we gear up for National Chemistry Week (NCW) with special appearances by representatives from NASA, ACS Undergraduate Programs, and the NCW Task Force. You will get an inside scoop on hands-on activities, the unifying event, and student competitions for NCW-2003. Winners of the Chemists Celebrate Earth Day Poetry Contest will also be announced. 2–3:30 p.m. *Communicating Chemistry to the NonScientist Workshop. Do you find it difficult to explain what you’re studying to your family, friends, or children that attend your hands-on demonstration shows? This workshop will focus on Elsa Reichmanis’ (2003 ACS President) communicating chemistry platform. You will learn tips to help you communicate about the profession of chemistry as well as to encourage the next generation to pursue careers in chemistry. (Sponsored by the ACS Committee on Public Relations and Communications.) 3:30–5 p.m. *Successful Student Affiliates Chapter Workshop. ACS Student Affiliates Chapters will have the opportunity to share ideas that will help them remain successful. 5:30–7 p.m. *Chemistry Survival Guide: Learning How To Learn Chemistry Symposium. This event will help you cope 866
with the challenges of learning chemistry. If you have ever been frustrated with studying or have studied really hard but didn’t do as well as you expected, then this session is for you. Students and professors are encouraged to attend. (Cosponsored by CHED.) Monday, September 8
8:30–11 a.m. *Graduate School Recruiters’ Breakfast/Undergraduate Hospitality Center. 10:30–noon *Chemistry of Space and Interstellar Media Symposium. This exciting symposium will discuss the chemical elements that can be found in space. It will also discuss the study of comets and how they relate to the development of laboratory techniques. Noon—1:15 p.m. *Graduate School Reality Check Workshop and Panel Discussion. A panel of graduate school recruiters, administrators, faculty, and students will discuss graduate schools in the chemicals sciences—how to get in, how to stay in, and how to get out. 2–4 p.m. *Undergraduate Research Poster Session. Undergraduate students will present their research results during this poster session. (Sponsored by CHED.) 4:30–5:30 p.m. *Eminent Scientist Lecture featuring Lura J. Powell. Powell (Lura J. Powell & Associates and the former director of Pacific Northwest National Lab) will discuss how the molecular world is key to unlocking the advances in science. She will also give tips for accelerating in the chemical profession. 8–10 p.m. Sci-Mix/Successful Student Affiliates Chapter Poster Session. Student Affiliates Chapters will display their activities during this grand event. Other Divisional posters and exhibits will be available for viewing as well. * Sponsored or cosponsored by the ACS SOCED Task Force on Undergrad.
