Three distinguished speakers, who use energetic materials in their profession, will define and classify the different types of energetic materials and discuss the practical applications of energetic materials, including how Hollywood creates special effects.

Kids & Chemistry and YOU: Bringing the Excitement of Hands-On Learning to Children
The Serious and Delirious Use of Chemistry in Movies*
This workshop will help you develop appropriate community outreach projects for 9- to 12-year-old children. By working directly with children, you can make a real contribution to their understanding of science by showing them that science and chemistry are part of everyday life, science and scientists make important contributions to everyday life, and scientists are people like YOU. Preregistration is required (call the SA program: 800-227-5558).
This presentation will begin with illustrations of brief mentions o\ chemistry in films where you may not expect it like "The Graduate", "It's a Wonderful Life", "1976", and "Bells on Their Toes." Movies that feature science will then be contrasted between then (the past) and now (the present), the real and the impossible, drama and comedy, and similar scenes in multiple movies. Several live chemical demonstrations relative to the movi scenes will be interspersed with the videos.

Leadership in chemical professions includes the ability to communicate how important our science is to our communities. Marvin C. Lang and the NCW program have provided exceptional community outreach programs. Lang will use a series of demonstrations to highlight how individuals can make chemistry understandable and exciting. Theresa Thewes will lead you in the making of "Glow in the Dark Slime". Finally, you will brainstorm and share ideas of how you and your SAACS chapter can become involved in NCW and chemistry outreach.

Join us to explore with your faculty colleagues their experiences in teaching service-learning courses, which range from courses for nonscience majors to upper-level chemistry courses. Additional service-learning projects will be highlighted in a poster session during the symposium.

This session has been designed to make sure undergraduates have gotten the most out of the national meeting. The task force wants to know about your experiences at the Anaheim meeting and your concerns and suggestions for improving the next national meeting.
