UNIVERSITY NEWS Butadiene Research at Wisconsin BORAX
A small-scale butadiene plant, operating in the chemical engineering building a t the Uni versity of Wisconsin, is giving information which should improve the design and opera tion of synthetic rubber plants in the United States, and be of inestimable aid to war pro duction. The research is being conducted by Kenneth M . Watson of the chemical engi neering department, under the sponsorship of the Rubber Reserve Co. The chemical engineering department re cently completed an 18-month project o n t h e production of chemicals used in making "TNT, conducted a t the request of the Office of Pro duction Research and Development.

Physics Research at Union College Union College, Schenectady, Ν . Υ.„ and the American Locomotive C o . have entered into a contract under which t h e company will enlarge the college's physics laboratories in return for the use of a laboratory and other facilities and help on specific technical prob lems b y members of the faculty. Ten or twelve new laboratories are to be provided and the facilities and faculty will be available to the company for five years. Construction will be completed within a year.
