UOP Markets Five New Secondary Alkyl Amines Five new secondary alkyl amines are being marketed under the brand name Alkams by Universal Oil Products, Des Plaines, 111. AU the new products feature branched alkyl chains, and are made by "a unique and versatile" continuous process. The process permits close control of the reaction, UOP says, and it's possible to get a specific molecule of high purity at relatively low cost. Price tags for the new chemicals are "well below one dollar a pound." Products offered include N - ( l methylheptyl ) -ethanolamine, N,N'bis(l-methylheptyl)-ethylenediamine, and N ^ - b i s ( l-ethyl-3methylpentyl ) -diethylenetriamine. Uses for these products, as seen by UOP, include cross-linking agents for polyurethane foams, curing agents for epoxide resins, cationic flotation agents, dispersants, and emulsifiers. Development quantities are available right now, but UOP says it can quickly turn out commercial quantities if the demand warrants. C 1
BRIEFS Two plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride have been added to the Monoplex line of Rohm & Haas, Philadelphia, Pa. The adipate plasticizers, Monoplex DIOA and Monoplex DDA, offer excellent processing qualities and good chemical stability, as well as low temperature flexibility, the company says. Of the two, Monoplex DIOA has better compatibility with PVC, while Monoplex DDA has lower volatility and improved resistance to extraction by aqueous media, according to Rohm & Haas. C2
N-acetyl ethanolamine is available from Aceto Chemical Co., Inc., Flushing, N.Y. The product finds application as a plasticizer and conditioning agent for various materials including textiles, paper, cellophane, and leather. It can also be used in printing inks, glues, and cork compositions, according to the company. C 3 58

Flexible, flame-out casting compound is available from Hysol Corp., Olean, N.Y. The two-component heat cure system, Hysol C9-5041 with Hardener H4-3656, has a low working viscosity, and a three-day pot life at room temperature. It has excellent electrical and physical values, passes the thermal shock washer test, and the ASTM D635-56T test on self-extinguishing, the company says. C4 Epoxy adhesive formulated for highstrength industrial use is available from Rubber & Asbestos Corp., Bloomfield, N.J. The adhesive is a twocomponent, room temperature curing epoxy, Bondmaster M 666, and can bond most hard-to-bond materials. Fully cured bonds exhibit minimal shrinkage, are electrical insulators, and provide excellent resistance\to weather, galvanic action, and most chemicals, according to the company. C5 Three sodium alcoholates have been added to the line of Gray Chemical, Inc., Gloucester, Mass. The three compounds are sodium methylate, sodium ethylate, and sodium isopropylate. A feature of the sodium ethylate is that it is available as a 25% slurry in toluene, with no excess ethanol present. C6
Insulating varnishes based on diallyl phthalate and diallyl isophthalate are available from Ram Chemicals, Gardena, Calif. The protective coatings, RAM 23-X4 and RAM 23-X5, can be used for coating, sealing, or dip encapsulating electrical components. RAM 23-X4 is designed to function at temperatures up to 150° C , RAM 23-X5 is designed for use at temperatures up to 180° C. C7
Vanadium trichloride and vanadium tetrachloride are available in pilot plant quantities from Stauffer Chemical Co., New York, N.Y. The trichloride is a free-flowing, deep purple crystalline powder of 9 8 + % purity. The tetrachloride is a dark red-brown liquid of 9 5 + % purity. Suggested uses for the chlorides are as a stereospecific polymerization catalyst, as an organometallic intermediate, and as a
starting material for high purity metal and intermetallics. Vanadium tetrachloride can also be used as a chlorinating agent. C8 Series of polyepoxide resins, designated KER resins, is commercially available from Koppers Co., Inc., Pittsburgh, Pa. The resins are derived from an o-cresol-formaldehyde novolak which was reacted with epichlorohydrin to form a polyepoxide. The molecular weight of the novolak determines the molecular weight of the KER resin, whose functionality may range from 2.5 to 5.5, the company explains. The reactive epoxy groups in the KER resins provide the resin formulator with a greater opportunity for modifying resin properties, and, in addition, these resins cure in less time to stable, inert products, the company says. C9
Cerium oxide mirror polish is available from Vitro Chemical Co., New York, N.Y. The compound, Vitrox 500, speeds production and lowers unit costs, according to the company. It is equally good for both blocking and beveling. C 10
Acid sensitive, terpolymer floor wax has been developed by Simoniz Co., Chicago, 111. The Permacrylic floor wax resists scuffs, stains, spills, and common household detergents, according to the company. The wax can be washed with hot water and detergents to remove ground-in dirt and stains, and following the wash the surface can be recoated with wax to produce even higher gloss, Simoniz says. C 11 Self-curing latex compound for carpet backing has been developed by Naugatuck Chemical division, U.S. Rubber Co., New York, N.Y. Lotol L-4634-D has good heat and light ageing characteristics, and it also has excellent low-temperature properties, the company says. C 12 High styrene terpolymer reinforcing latex which can be blended with other rubber and resin latexes to provide improved base compounds, is available from Marbon Chemical Division, Borg-Warner Corp., Washington, W.Va. Designated Marmix 16123, Continued on page 63

chemistry from Norton Thermal stability · . . unusual pu rity. This is what the research chemist looks for in refractory materials. Norton Company offers him both. Hydrogen for a variety of applica tions is available today from high temperature reactors lined with fused aluminum oxide refractory material. The requirement here is to contain the reaction . . . containment without contamination. Norton material meets the need. One important use of this hydrogen . · . which can be made anywhere . . . is in ammoniabase fertilizers for sub-marginal land.
Maleic and phthalic anhydrides, and ethylene oxide, are products of reactions which offer a similar chal lenge. The catalyst carriers for these reactions must have heat resistivity, uniform size and porosity, and a purity not commonly found in ce ramic materials. Norton pioneered their development, and has a fund of knowledge for anyone interested in catalysis. Diethylaminoethyl
acrylate
is
now
commercially available from Union Carbide Chemicals Co., New York, N.Y. The acrylate-contained amino group makes an emulsion polymer which is virtually impervious to alkaline cleaning materials, yet sensitive enough to permit easy removal by mildly acidic stripping materials. Tests indicate that floor polishes formulated with diethylaminoethyl acrylate may exhibit increased adhesion to almost any common substrate. C 16
Two textile softeners have been added to the Emersoft line from Emery Industries, Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio. Emersoft 7705 is a nonionic paste softener featuring ready dispersibility and lower unit cost. Emersoft 7710 softener base is a 100% active material
that forms a cationic-anionic paste softener by mixing with dilute acetic acid. Both softeners resist yellowing upon aging, impart softness and good sewing lubricity, the company says. C 17
Polycarbonate resin from Mobay Chemical Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., has been certified and listed as a selfextinguishing material. Merlon combines the self-extinguishing property with transparency, high impact resistance, and dimensional stability, the company says.
