designed apparatus has a three-heat hot plate which permits rapid heating until distillation begins and reduction of heat thereafter to maintain the desired dis tillation rate. Vapor locking is prevented by passing the raw solvent feed line through the water-cooled condenser; vapors passing up the feed line are condensed and refluxed back into the retort. This ar rangement also serves to preheat the solvent. The still has found application for the recovery and purification of such sol-

A new photoelectric recording Raman spectrometer has been brought out by The Perkin-Elmer Corp. for molecular structure studies and quantitative analysis of complex mixtures. The Model R features a Torontotype helical mercury arc excitation source and a coated optical system for transferring Raman radiation from the sample tube to the monochrometer. Dispersion system, wave-length drive, detector, and recorder are similar to components used on standard PerkinElmer infrared spectrometers.
