Vacuum Ultraviolet Ionic Emission Lines of Typical Group 13-1 5 Elements for Inductively Coupled Argon Plasma Emission Spectrometry Takasi Uehiro,* Masathoshi Morita, and Keiichiro Fuwa National Institute for Environmental Studies, Yatabe, Tsukuba, Ibaraki 305, Japan
Observable Ionic emlsslon lines of group 13-15 elements In an ICP In the vacuum ultravlolet reglon (185-150 nm) were estlmated from lonlzatlon potentlals of atoms and electronlc energy states of Ions. Expected Ionic resonance llnes of indium (158.7 nm), germanlum (164.9 nm), tin (175.8 nm), and lead (168.2 nm) have high sensltlvltles under ordlnary condltlons for multielement analysls for ICPES. Background equivalent concentratlons (detectlon limits) were 30 (3), 100 (lo), 400 (25), and 200 (15) ng/g for In, Ge, Sn, and Pb, respectively. Spectral Interferences from other elements examlned are not more than 5 X g of anaiyte/g of Interferlng element except for aluminum on lead (1.2 X
It has often been said that ionic emission lines are more intense than neutral atomic emission lines in inductively coupled argon plasma (ICP). In fact, sensitive analytical lines of many elements for ICP emission spectrometry (ICPES) are ionic emission lines; however, some elements such as typical group 13-17 elements [In this paper the periodic group notation is in accord with recent actions by IUPAC and ACS nomenclature committees. A and B notation is eliminated because of wide confusion. Groups IA and IIA become groups 1and 2. The d-transition elements comprise groups 3 through 12, and the p-block elements comprise groups 13 through 18. (Note that the former Roman number designation is preserved in the last digit of the new numbering: e.g., I11 3 and 13.)] in general, do not have sensitive ionic emission lines (1, 2). In addition, sensitivities of the elements without ionic analytical lines are generally inferior to those of elements with ionic analytical lines. In a previous paper (31, we reported vacuum ultraviolet (vacuum UV) emission lines of aluminum in an ICP. Among the lines, the ionic resonance line (167.1 nm) was very intense and the sensitivity was improved by 2 orders of magnitude
