Formate runway deicing fluids Airports in Europe use liquid potassium formate, a derivative of formic acid, 2 to 1 over liquid potassium acetate for effective runway deicing and its environmental benefits. Potassium formate has approximately one-third the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of potassium acetate, making it easier on lakes, rivers and streams, and can reduce an airport’s waste water treatment costs, making it easier on budgets. BASF is building a new formic acid production facility in Louisiana to make formates an affordable and environmentally compatible option for North American airports as well. Want to learn more?
