Web Edition Requires Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. to Change to Number System for Citing References Internet editions of all journals published by the American Chemical Society are now available; these Web versions include interactive features not possible for print journals plus a wide range of subscription options. The web edition will contain the following features: (a) Two separate formats for users to view articles: interactive text (HTML) and complete page image (PDF). It will be possible to search and print articles from the entire database starting from 1996 to the present. (b) Interactive links to other recognized databases. (c) Articles ASAP (as soon as published). Beginning now, the ACS will post journal articles on the Web as soon as they have been peer reviewed, copy edited, and checked by authors for accuracy. This will allow subscribers access to “published” articles several weeks before they appear in the pages of the printed journal. One of the enhancements to the Web editions of the ACS journals is linking the citation in the text to the bibliographic citation in the reference. That is, clicking on the reference number in the text brings up the bibliographic citation. This is impossible to do with the reference style currently used in Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. Over the years, our authors and readers have generally shown a preference for the author-year method for citing references even though most other journals use the number system. Some of the reasons for preferring the author-year method have disappeared with the advent of modern software for word processing that have sophisticated techniques for formatting and numbering references. We feel that the interests of our subscribers are best served by giving them access to the full range of features the Web version of an ACS journal permits. Thus, we have decided that it is time to abandon the author-year method in favor of the number method. Effective immediately we ask that all authors begin submitting manuscripts using the number method of citing references. A complete description of our new format is given in the Guide for Authors that appears in this issue. Of course, it will take some time before this change will be complete and our subscribers will be able to use all the interactive features of the Web version mentioned above.
