The Great Train Mystery Somewhere between Tennessee and New Jersey the cars had vanished. On board, a piggyback shipment of cellulose acetate destined for a New Jersey customer. As of 7:30 PM Friday, when the PA reported the shipment overdue, the cars were seven hours late. If production was to continue over the weekend, they would have to be located and the order delivered within twelve hours. The man in charge was one of Eastman's Northeastern sales representatives. Working with railroad personnel and Eastman people along the route, he began the search. Eastman's Traffic Department at Kingsport verified the fact that the shipment had left on schedule. No leads developed until the search narrowed in on the freight yards outside Washington, D.C. There were the cars. Off on a siding. Awaiting minor repairs. Once found, no time was lost in correcting the trouble and hooking them up to the earliest east-bound freight. Scheduled arrival time at the freight yards—3:00 AM Saturday. Still there was no time to rest. The representative notified a local trucker—got him out of bed and asked him to have tractors waiting at the Jersey City freight yards to unload the piggybacks. The transfer took place in the dark early morning hours. And dawn found the Eastman representative supervising the unloading at the customer's plant. A good night's work for all involved.
