Pellicular packings for liquid chromatography.... a closer look. The new microparticulate column packings are great. We should know; we're the leaders in the field. But it is important that the on-going role of pellicular media be understood. Pelliculars are complementary to microparticle packings. Complements with very important and unique characteristics. Ease of packing in the lab, for one. Not so for microparticles; they need expert packing to realize full potential. And repacking. Things happen to columns. Should a sample contaminate the packing, or there be a mobile phase problem, etc., etc., little time and less money is lost. It's a simple and inexpensive thing to empty and repack a column with pelliculars, yourself. You can have a complete "library" of bottled pellicular media for a modest outlay. Very, very handy on a standby basis. And consider pelliculars operationally. A shelf of pellicular media packings equates to wide flexibility. Then, pelliculars are ideal for routine analyses, e.g., quality control. Ideal, too, where you would like to know more about the sample before further analyses, e.g., screening separations. Pelliculars, in short, deserve very serious considerations as packings of choice for many separations and in many applications. Microparticulates are great—and so are pelliculars.
