Toluene prices rose during 1 9 5 3 , a n d have continued to rise to today's level of about 35 cents per gallon. Reflecting substantial defense requirements for most of 1 9 5 3 , t o l u e n e sales rose from 8 7 . 5 million gallons to more than 1 3 0 million gallons. More than t w o thirds of all t o l u e n e consumption in 1 9 5 2 h a d gone t o explosives and avgas. U s e of toluene in protective coatings a n d solvents declined, as other aromatic mixes such as xylenes r e p l a c e d it in s o m e applications. A 27.5-million-gallon increase in production of b e n z e n e from petroleum brought total petroleum-deTived b e n z e n e to 6 3 million gallons, almost exactly compensating for a drop in tar distillers production of b e n z e n e .
