T

he Journal of Medicinal Chemistry will be publishing a special issue on “Drug Metabolism and Toxicology” in January 2020 in association with the below journal publishing on the same topic. The journals and guest editors are the following: Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, F. Peter Guengerich, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Chemical Research in Toxicology, Eric Blomme, AbbVie, Inc. A special issue on Drug Metabolism and Toxicology is very timely for medicinal chemists. The process of finding new medicines is difficult, and only a small fraction of new entities and even selected leads will reach the market. Over the past few decades the attrition due to poor human pharmacokinetics has been reduced but there is still very much of a need to do better prediction. Attrition due to preclinical toxicity and adverse events in humans has been estimated at >1/3, leaving a great opportunity for improvement. Reducing chemical attrition is not the only goal. Every compound dying in a late-phase clinical trial represents a great loss of resources, both time and money, that could have been applied to other efforts. Thus, there is a great need for more useful strategies for early safety assessment approaches in the discovery phase. For the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, authors are encouraged to submit Articles, Brief Articles, and Drug Annotations at https://pubs.acs.org/publish. If you are interested in submitting a Perspective manuscript, please contact Nicholas Meanwell at [email protected]. Due Date for Submissions: May 31, 2018: Perspectives June 30, 2018: Articles, Brief Articles, and Drug Annotations Accepted papers for the special issue can appear online as Just Accepted Manuscripts (JAMs) and As Soon As Publishable (ASAP) manuscripts. They can then be cited at any time thereafter but are scheduled to appear together in a January 2020 special issue.
