RAVINGS

1953 was the year Fisher revolutionized the reagent industry by packaging its liquid chemicals by volume rather than weight— five years before any other manufacturer— to give you- safer, more economical use of shelf and stock space. Today, Fisher offers you such cost-saving advantages as six-pack units for still easier ordering, storage and larger discounts. For tomorrow, people at the Fisher Chemical Manufacturing Division, Fair Lawn, N.J., America's largest plant devoted exclusively to the production of reagent chemicals, are searching for new ways to serve you better, to give you additional savings in ordering, packaging, and storing. Why not look to Fisher for purity, service and savings in reagent chemicals when you place your next order? B-i09a

OALESMEN FOR D U PONT'S finishes di-

vision have six new products to push this week. The six: a soil retardant finish for painted surfaces, three antirust primers for metals, and two antirust colored paints. Soil Retardant Concentrate, based on Ludox colloidal silica, is 15% Si0 2 , with an average particle diameter of 17 millimicrons. Its soil retarding action is the same as that of Ludox (C&EN, May 23, 1955, page 2244)—the small silica particles fill up the pores and pits on the surface so that dirt particles cannot enter them. The material is diluted to 1% silica, can be sprayed, brushed, roller-coated, or mopped onto the surface. Materials cost: 1 / 4 cent per square foot. Application cost: depends on labor rates, the company points out. Du Pont has tested it on storage tanks, equipment, buildings, tunnels, corridors, signs. After two years, the surfaces have shown little soiling, the company finds. And it works on any surface sloped enough to drain any excess applied. It may also find a market in home painting, but the company will not push this use until it has completed its industrial trials. • Antirust. One of the new primers is a blend of resin and oils plus red lead. Use: iron, steel, or tin surfaces that cannot be cleaned to bright metal. The second primer is a zinc chromate formulation for rust-free iron, steel, tin, and aluminum. The third is for galvanized iron and copper. The colored finishes are wrought-iron black and chrome-finish aluminum. All five can be topcoated with Duco enamels, Du Pont adds.

HPT (hexamethyl-phosphoric triamide), RMB (resorcinol monobenzoate), OPS (p-octylphenyl salicylate), and THBP (trihydroxybutyrophenone). Eastman pegs the first three compounds as ultraviolet stabilizers. H P T , a clear, light yellow, soluble liquid, is intended for vinyl plastics. In a weathering test, it protected polyvinyl chloride against degradation for seven years, the company says. The benzoate RMB has been used successfully in cellulosic plastics. The salicylate derivative, OPS, is earmarked for use in polyethylene and polypropylene. Its special feature, according to Eastman, is its compatibility with the resins. The last member of the quartet, THBP, is a crystalline antioxidant for poly olefins and paraffin waxes. Eastman's tests indicate that polyethylene with 0 . 1 % THBP is more than 21/2 times more stable to oxidation than is a control sample. In a paraffin wax at a concentration of 0.01% the AOM stability at 100° C. exceeded 1000 hours —compared to 135 hours for propyl gallate. C 1

• Textile processing lubricant, called Cirrasol HA, comes from Canadian Industries, Montreal, Que. Designed for spinning of synthetic fibers on cotton, flax, and dry-combed processing systems, the product also has antistatic properties, the company says. C2 • Nylanthrene green d y e for nylon yarn, stocks, and piece goods is marketed by Althouse Chemical, Reading, Pa. The company cites these properties: level dyeing, light and wash fastness, bright color. C3 • Liquid epoxy sealant for concrete floors is made by Permagile, Woodside, N.Y. The producer says that the product, called Armorseal, develops a tough, glossy skin, resists water, oils, greases, petroleum fuels, alkali, and mild acids. C4 • Aerosol

• Rust inhibiting primer, marketed as Jet-Dri by Consolidated Chemical and Paint, Brooklyn, N.Y., dries in 15 minutes. The prime coat resists blows, abrasion, and chemicals, CCP says, and is easy to apply and to cover. C 6

• Atco SA is added to its line of finishing agents by Metro-Atlantic, Centredale, R.I. The product gives antislip properties to synthetic fabrics, can be used in acid medium with other finishing and dye fixing agents, according to the company. C7

• Purifice Nl 7, a high molecular weight flocculant for use in potable water, is now available from Dow Chemical, Midland, Mich. Recently approved by the U.S. Public Health Service, the product works in concentrations below one p.p.m., the company says. C8

• Derivatives of benzotrifluoride—two

dozen of them—are available in research and pilot plant quantities from Pierce Chemical, Rockford, 111. The list includes most isomers of the monosubstituted amino, bromo, chloro, fluoro, and hydroxy derivatives as well as several aminohalobenzotrifhiorides. Potential use: Introduce trifluoromethyl groups, Pierce suggests. C9

available from Narmco Resins, Costa Mesa, Calif. Supplied in rolls, Metlbond 406 is dry and pliable at room temperature, softens, flows, and cures at high temperatures, Narmco reports. C 11 • Procion Brilliant Purple H3RS, a dye

for cotton and viscose rayon fabrics, has been introduced in the U.S. by Arnold, Hoffman & Co. The soluble dye is fixed by steam, has good print paste stability, shows wash, light, and perspiration fastness, and can be applied by any of the usual methods for type H dyes, the company says. The dye was developed by Imperial Chemical Industries in England. C 12

• Low residue mite control for flowers is the aim of Tedion 90, marketed by Niagara Chemical Division, Food Machinery & Chemical, Middleport, N.Y. The new formulation—907c tetrachlorodiphenyl sulfone, 10% wetting agent and inert materials—is safe, long lasting, and effective in low concentrations, Niagara says. CIO
