Proportioning Electric Motor Control System The Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co., Minneapolis, Minn., has developed a motor-operated valve control system which is fundamentally a combination of two parts—the elec trical transmission system and the associated power unit whichi can be adjacent to, or remote from, the controlling instrumeot. A mechanical interconnection is required between the power unit and the electrical balancing mechanism. The transmission system operates on the Wheatstone bridge principle. The power unit, inherently a motor-driven speed reducer, causes i t s dri-ve shaft to take a new position whenever the conditions under con trol change slightly. The result is a constant control of tem perature, pressure, humidity, liquid level, rates of flow, stoker, pulverizer feed, etc. The apparatus may be used in conjunction with practically all types of control instruments with b u t slight modifications of existing instruments. The apparatus is capable of being produced in almost any size. A notable feature is that the motor operates only when a change of position is demanded b y the controller. Then t h e driven devices are moved immediately to a new position and remain there until conditions again change. Demands for movements, irrespective of any former positioning, find t h e motor ready to respond instantly with full torque. A. furtner advantage is that the magnitude of the response t o a given d e flection or the-controlling instrument may be made as great or small a s desired, or may be made to vary automatically with relation to the existing and desired condition. T h e I>u Pont Ammonia Corp. has been dissolved and its assets and business transferred to the d u Pont Co., as of Septem ber 1. This business will be conducted b y a fifth industrial department, t o be known a s the Ammonia Department, with F. Λ. Wardenberg, president of the Ammonia Corp., as its general manager, and Walter Dannenbaum, vice president of the corporation, as assistant general manager. Other executive heads of the Ammonia Department will be: Production Division, R. G. Clough, production manager; Sales Division, R. W . McClellan, director of sales; Chemical Division, Roger Williams, chemical director; Engineering Division, S. K. Varaes, chief engineer; Control Division, S. J . Thomison, control manager. T h e National Ammonia Co. will be continued as a separate corporation, its work, however, being consolidated as far as possible with the work of the Ammonia Department.
Wage Increase at Monsanto During a period of prevalent wage cuts the Monsanto Chemical Works, a t its St. Louis plant, has undertaken a successful ex periment in wage increases. During t h e second quarter of 1931 the average hourly rate paid t o production labor increased 10.4 per cent over the average hourly rate paid in t h e second quarter o f 1929, yet the labor hours consumed per unit of output declined 23.7 per cent, and the labor cost per unit of output declined 15.5 per cent in a comparison of the same two periods. Comparisons with 1930 are even more favorable, because of a smaller output in that year. The company states that the new policy has given it the benefit of lower labor costs and a better gracie of employees, and that the employees who have effected the saving are receiving approximately 40 per cent of it in in creased hourly rates.
Industrial Resources Map T h e Industrial Development Department of the Missouri Pacific Railroad Co. has issued a map in colors showing the location of mineral and vegetable resources used i n the chemical ind-ustry and available along the lines of that railroad and con necting roads. The data indicate a great variety of important raw materials occurring in the states of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Kansas, Ne braska, Missouri, southern Illinois, and western Kentucky, served b y the Missouri Pacific and its connections.
