The unit, a photoconductor detector type, interprets changes in the intensity of radiation reaching its photoconductor in terms of changes in the amount of electric cur rent flowing through the photoconduc tor. The photoconductor in the new de tector is of germanium, which is made sensitive to infrared by adding gold as an impurity. An added advantage of this detector over other varieties is said to be its response to the longer wave lengths in the infrared, up to ten mi crons. The company says that it can detect small fluctuations in the tem perature of an object even below body temperature, due to its speed and sensi tivity. P-47
