each. The cells can be returned to Labline for recharging. The cabinet, of metal construction, has a built-in water valve, stainless steel sink and top, and plastic discharge goose neck. It stands 37 inches high and meas ures 20 X 20 inches in width and depth. 10 Flash Point Tester

TRY THE

Fisher Scientific Co. has redesigned its Tag open-cup flash point tester with a built-in 150-watt electric heating unit in the base. A variable transformer permits the heating rate to be controlled in conformance with ASTM specifica tions. The apparatus is available also with gas and with alcohol lam]) heaters. Each type has a water bath to hold the sample cup, a swivel thermometer sup port, and a flame-tipped «'and with which to ignite the vapors from the sample. The water bath is designed with an outlet and inlet so that water can be circulated between determina tions to cool the sample cup. 11

WAY MACHLETT

A completely self-contained unit, the VirTis freeze-drying apparatus does not require the conventional dry ice chamber, condenser, etc. The inner 2.8 liter cooling chamber holds enough dry ice and solvent for unattended over-night operation. And, furthermore, because of its large capacity, it lends itself readily to shell freezing (see illustration). Freeze-drying unit and trap are expertly made of polished 18-8 stainless steel and hence can be autoclaved after use with infectious materials. The apparatus is fitted with 12 take-off taps capable of removing a minimum of 100 ml of water. For added simplicity, freeze-drying flasks are designed with a wide mouth to facilitate easy removal of dried materials.

IMPROVED Machlett All-Glass Freeze-Drying Apparatus

Electromagnet

A laboratory electromagnet for pro ducing varying magnetic field configura tions is being produced by Varian As sociates. The magnet, model V-4004, has two fixed energizing coils with ad justable poles and readily changeable pole caps. By adjustment of each pole, any air gap width up to 4.3 inches can be ob tained. A variety of cylindrical, conical, or specially-shaped pole caps are avail able for a wide range of flux patterns. A gap field flux density as high as 28,600 gauss can be attained. 12 Ultracentrifuge Temperature Control

A system for continuous measurement and control of the temperature of operat ing ultracentrifuge rotors to better than 0.1° C. has been designed by Specialized Instruments Corp. The apparatus, which is applicable to any of Specialized Instruments' Model Ε analytical ultracentrifuges, consists of a thermistor em bedded in the rotor, electrical connec Ε36-695H Machlett A l l Glass Freexe-Drying Unit complete as illustrated with adapters, sup tions brought out through mercury pool port stand and rings and four flasks 100, 200 or 250 ml capacity (Please specify) $66.00 contacts, and a control unit and indica Ε36-695J Machlett Freeie-Drying Unit o n l y . . . 44.00 tor panel which mounts on the front E36-695B Freeze-Drying Flasks, 100, 200 or • 250 ml 3.00 j panel of the ultracentrifuge.
