As part of their 2010 Chemists Celebrate Earth Day celebration, the American Chemical Society is sponsoring an illustrated poem contest for students in grades K-12. To participate, students write and illustrate a poem to celebrate ACS's 2010 Earth Day theme, Plants: The Green Machines! Students then submit their poems to their ACS Local Section and each Local Section will choose one winning entry from each of these grade-level categories: • • • •

K-second grade Third-fifth grade Sixth-eighth grade Ninth-12th grade

The Local Sections submit their winning entries to the national contest by April 9, 2010. Winners of the national contest will be announced on or before April 22, 2010.

National prizes for each category are $200 for first-place winners and $100 for second-place winners. In past contests, only haiku poems were accepted. This year, ACS is accepting any form of poetry. Possible poetic forms include, but are not limited to, haiku, limerick, ode, ABC poem, free verse, end rhyme, blank verse, and sonnet. The main condition about the poem is that it be no longer than 40 words. Possible topics for poems related to chemistry and plants include (but are not limited to) the following: • • • •

How plants keep the air clean Plants as a source of food The use of plants as an alternative fuel source Photosynthesis and respiration
