ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
Dale W. Margerum is professor of chemistry at Purdue University where he has been active in research and teaching since 1954. He was born in St. Louis, Mo. in 1929 (he has a twin brother who also is a chemist). He received the B. A. degree with honors in chemistry from Southeast Missouri State College in 1950 and the Ph.D. degree from Iowa State University in 1955. He was a research chemist for the Ames Laboratory of the Atomic Energy Commission in 1952-53. He was awarded the Phi Lambda Upsilon Graduate Research Award at Iowa State in 1954 and that same year joined the faculty of Purdue University as an instructor. He became assistant professor in 1957, associate professor in 1961, and professor in 1965. Dr. Margerum was a visiting scientist at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, University of California, Livermore in 1960. In 1963-64 he was a National Science Foundation Senior Postdoctoral Fellow with Dr. Manfred Eigen, Max Planck Institut fur physikalische Chemie, Gottingen, Germany. Dr. Margerum has published about 35 research papers and is coauthor of a laboratory textbook. He is a consulting editor for McGraw-Hill Book Co. and is a member of the Medicinal Chemistry Study Section of the National Institutes of Health. He is past chairman of the Purdue Section of the American Chemical Society. His principal research interests have been in the area of chemical kinetics of coordination compounds. He and his coworkers have done extensive work in kinetics of multidentate ligand exchange reactions. He has been particularly interested in the application of kinetic knowledge to solve difficult problems of analysis. Presentwork includes the study of kinetic methods of chemical analysis, the study of coordination chain reactions and ultratrace analysis by catalytic methods. He also is active in the study of very fast reactions in solution by the use of flow and relaxation techniques. Charles N. Reilley is Kenan Professor of Chemistry, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N. C. Born in Charlotte, N. C , in 1925, Dr. Reilley received the B.S. degree from the University of North Carolina in 1947. After two years as an instructor at Queens College in Charlotte, he entered Princeton University as a graduate student, where he was awarded the Merck Fellowship in Analytical Chemistry in 1951.
