Editor Joins ASTIA Dr. Charles L. Bernier, editor of Chemical Abstracts since 1958, has joined tne stair or the Armed Serv ices Technical In formation Agency (ASTIA) in Ar lington, Va. He will be working with C o l o n e l James O. Vann in revising a thesaurus of scientific and technical terms used in machine han dling of information and generic searching. Dr. Fred A. Tate, assistant director of CAS, will be acting editor of Chemical Abstracts. A native of Winona, Minn., Dr. Bernier received a B.S. degree in 1930 from Montana State College, and an M.S. in 1933 and a Ph.D. in chemis try in 1935 from Ohio State Univer sity. He then became a CAS indexer, and was named an assistant editor in 1939 and an associate editor in 1941. Dr. Bernier has published numerous papers on fundamental research in the theory of indexing and other aspects of abstracting. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Amer ican Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Documenta tion Institute, and the Society of Indexers.
Asia Foundation Renews Grant The Asia Foundation's grant to the ACS has been renewed for 1962. This will enable the Society to continue its program for closer scholarly and per sonal ties between Asian and Ameri can chemists. Begun in 1960 at the suggestion of The Asia Foundation, San Francisco, Calif., the program is offered to quali fied scientists of Afghanistan, Borneo, Burma, Cambodia, Ceylon, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaya, Nepal, Pakistan, Phil ippines, Singapore, Republic of China (Taiwan), Thailand, and Vietnam. The grant will be about $2200. The Society will use the funds to enable distinguished or promising chemists, or scientists in closely related fields, to attend national or regional
scientific meetings; to finance member ships in the ACS up to three years for qualified Asian scientists; and to pro vide such other aid as may be in the best interests of Asian chemists and their countries. Information about the awards and application forms may be obtained from chairmen of departments of chemistry and chemical engineering of American universities or by writing to the Division of Research Grants and Fellowships, American Chemical So ciety, 1155 Sixteenth St., N.W., Wash ington 6, D.C. The Asia Foundation has offered to suggest eligible candi dates in the United States and abroad who might benefit from the program. Not eligible are those who have taken permanent residence in this country. The project will be administered, with the aid of ACS committees, by the ACS Research Grants and Fellow ships Division, headed by Dr. Karl Dittmer.
Connor Re-elected Director-at-Large Dr. Ralph Connor, chairman of the board and vice president and director of Rohm & Haas Co., has been re elected directorat-large of the American Chemi cal Society by mail vote of the councilors. Dr. Connor will serve a four-year term 1962-65. He received a B.S. from the Univer sity of Illinois in 1929, and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1932. He has received the King's Medal for Service from Britain and the U.S. Medal for Merit. Dr. Connor has been an ACS mem ber since 1928. He has served as director-at-large since 1954. He has been chairman of the Board of Direc tors (1956-58) and is now a member of the Executive Committee ( 1955 to date). His former ACS posts at the national level include chairman of the Board Committee on Finance, Board Manpower Committee, Board Com mittee for Liaison with Department of Defense, and the Council Committee on Nominations and Elections.
