B d zt orzal ACS Symposium on Porphyrin Geochemistry This issue marks the second time Energy & Fuels has gathered articles from a recent American Chemical Society Meeting Symposium on Porphyrin Geochemistry. We wanted to share with you some of the most recent developments in this scientific frontier area. Porphyrins, as our readers know, are molecular fossils, providing evidence of ancient algae or photosynthetic bacteria. Since fossil-precursor relationships are only partly understood, workers in this field are up against severe challenges as they attempt to define ancient environmental or depositional conditions. But interest is high because the study of porphyrins offers increasingly practical opportunities to assist petroleum exploration. In this issue, you will learn about new access to urgently needed standards in the articles by Timothy Lash and his co-workers at Illinois State, a study of Ni and V porphyrins in Saudi Arabian crude oil by Mohammed Ali and co-workers in Saudi Arabia, the sharpening of quantitative analysis in the article by Brian Popp and his collaborators, the use of HPLC for petroleum-sourcerock correlation in the article by Reuben Ocampo and his associates at Strasbourg, and the speeding up of qualitative analysis in the article by me and my colleagues. We hope you will find this material interesting and useful. Let us know; we’d love to hear from you! David H .
