Looking back over a neophyte editor's first year, he is impressed with the wide range and generally high quality of the manuscripts he has seen. Surprisingly few are poor; however, surprisingly few also are written with style and care and are addressed to a particular reader. In submitting papers to a journal concerned with new advances and permanent technical value, too many authors have apparently neglected to ask themselves: What is novel in this work? IYhat is its chief value to the development or design engineer? Have I organized the paper to emphasize these values succinctly? Are my conclusions too broad to follow necessarily from the data, or should other possible interpretations be discussed? The editor asks himself some questions, too. Is the scope of the journal set properly? Is it too broad? Too specialized? Is it too theoretical for our hypothetical reader-a development and design engineer with broad technical interests? \t'hat about the paper on industrial chemistry which reports chiefly the gross effects of process conditions on conversion and product distribution? Is it really useful to the process development engineer? Should it not present design data with quantitative relationships between inputs, outputs, and controllable variables? If the process is of unproved economic value, should not the paper suggest the economic limitations and prospects for avoiding them? Not always easy to answer, these and many similar questions pose the challenge of the editor's task. IVe have been gratified by your response and support. O u r aim is to make this quarterly part of your indispensible reading and the most appropriate outlet for your best technical papers. \Yith your continued contributions and criticisms, we can continue to approach this goal.
