of prospective authors of papers for ANALYTICAL CHEMas well as for other ACS journals, is called to the recently published “Handbook for Authors.” The Handbook, prepared by the editors and editorial staffs of the ACS journals, is being distributed to all subscribers to these journals. It is intended to help the author in the various aspects of manuscript preparation and proofreading. It describes preferred methods of organization of manuscripts and presentation of tabular and graphical data. Extensive lists of preferred symbols, units, and abbreviations are presented. Although the Handbook is not intended as a manual on technical writing, it does offer some common examples of erroneous usage, style, and spelling. Even before its publication, the Handbook served a useful purpose in bringing together the journal editors to discuss differences of usage among the various ACS journals. Each journal will continue to have its individuality, but unnecessary and trivial differences have been eliminated, a t least to a first approximation. As a result, the task of typists and draftsmen, as well as authors, should be significantly simplified. In addition, the transfer of manuscripts between the various ACS journals will become simplified. It is recognized that revisions will be necessary to keep abreast of developments in documentation, editorial, and publication procedures. No doubt, the users of the first edition will have suggestions for its improvement. These should be directed to the Publication Manager, Journals, American Chemical Society, 1155 16th St. N. W., Washington, D. C. 20036. TTENTION
