the Center for the History of Chemistry (CHOC), which is located on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. This center, which celebrated its third anniversary on January 26, is a joint endeavor of the ACS, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the University of Pennsylvania. It was established to discover and disseminate information about historical resources and to encourage research, scholarship, and popular writing on the history of chemistry. The aims of CHOC include organizing a program of interviews and oral histories on major developments in modern chemistry and locating historical manuscript and archival records of individuals, societies, trade associations, and companies important in the history of chemistry, chemical engineering, and the chemical process industries. It is particularly interesting to note that CHOC is based at the Edgar Fahs Smith Memorial Collection of the University of Pennsylvania, one of the foremost research collections in the history of chemistry and chemical technology. Dr. Smith (1854-1928) was a professor of analytical chemistry a t Penn, served three terms as president of the ACS, and had a long-time interest in historical chemistry. Many of today’s analytical chemists first became interested in the history of our discipline with the appearance in 1977 of “A History of Analytical Chemistry,” edited by H. A. Laitinen and G. W. Ewing and published by the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry to celebrate the centennial of the ACS. We now have a responsibility to inform present and future generations of chemists of the many important contributions made to science and technology by analytical chemists. Over the years a number of our intellectually curious colleagues have accumulated memorabilia, manuscripts, equipment, etc., of historical significance. Unfortunately, much of this treasure will be lost unless it is transferred and cataloged in a central repository such as CHOC. My impression is that industry with its vast resources may come to dominate the technical content of the center. Therefore, I urge analytical chemists to mount a campaign to identify items of historical importance and to have them incorporated into the center. Let us foster the fine tradition of our profession and build on the pioneering efforts of Edgar Fahs Smith.
