Join the ACS Analytical Chemistry Division During the past twenty years, the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry has grown from a membership of less than 1000 to over 3500. Correspondingly, the scope of activities has enlarged greatly . The Divisions were originally set up largely to arrange for symposia and sessions for contributed papers at National ACS Meetings. Beginning in 1948, the Analytical Chemistry Division has sponsored (jointly with Analytical Chemistry) the Summer Symposium. The biennial Directory of Division members has become a tradition. Not only does it list professional addresses, but it is coded to give information about job titles, academic degrees, and areas of specialization. In recent years, several types of significant professional activities have been undertaken. In 1966, a Summer Fellowship program was initiated, and since 1970 both summer and fullyear fellowship awards have been made. These are supported by contributions from members and scientific organizations and industrial organizations, as well as by the Division itself. They are nationally competitive and represent a distinctive recognition of exceptional merit in graduate students. An undergraduate award consisting of a 15-month subscription to Analytical Chemistry has been presented to an outstanding undergraduate student in each of several hundred institutions each year for the past several years. Several years ago, a Committee on Broadening Analytical Activities was set up, and its studies have led to several new programs. Of these, the Committee on Environmental Analytical Methodology was described in last month’s editorial. Several symposia in the field of clinical chemistry have been sponsored with the cooperation of the Division. The Committee on Professional Activities has initiated a Summer Intern program, in which a pool of undergraduate student applicants is made available to industrial organizations for summer employment. Readers of Analytical Chemistry are urged to support and enlarge these activities by joining the Division and volunteering their services and advice. Send a check for $3.00 to cover annual dues to the membership chairman, Dr. Rudolph S.Bottei, Department of Chemistry, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana 46556.
