throughout the world will rejoice a t the announcement of the Gold Medal in Analytical Chemistry t o be awarded by the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the American Pharmaceutical Association. To be awarded biennially t o an outstanding contributor t o the basic discipline of analytical chemistry or t o applications related to pharmaceutical analysis, the medal will be named in honor of Professor I. 31. Kolthoff, mho will be its first recipient in November 1967. It is particularly appropriate that the medal, originating from a pharmaceutical group, be named in honor of Professor Kolthoff , who received his early training in pharmaceutical chemistry and made a number of significant contributions to that field. Especially, however, the new medal symbolizes a recognition of the pioneering contributions of Professor Kolthoff who, more than any other scientist, is responsible for the introduction of fundamental physical and chemical principles to the understanding of the ancient art of analysis, and for establishing analytical chemistry as a basic research discipline. The Kolthoff Gold Aledal will serve as an inspiration t o young scientists and also, it is hoped, as an example for industries and associations having a stake in the future of analytical chemistry as a scientific discipline.
