Prompt Publication of Symposia

T

HE FIRST 23 PAPERS

in this issue are those given a t the International Gas Chromatography Symposium held in Houston, Texas, the end of January. Most of the papers were published within 2 to 4 months after the received date. To accomplish this enviable schedule, Dr. Albert Zlatkis, the University of Houston symposium chairman and organizer, stipulated that the papers deal with original material for review and that the papers be submitted to ANALSTICALCHEMISTRY before the meeting. RIost of the authors were able to meet the deadline and such papers had the final changes made just prior t o or during the meeting. The half dozen papers submitted a t the meeting were reviewed during the week of the meeting by reviewers appointed by the Editor, and the authors and reviewers were able t o collaborate in a manner that is not usually possible. All of the papers passed the review, but many authors made suggested reviewer changes which strengthened their presentation. It has been our experience that symposia usually suffer a publication mortality rate of a t least 50% even though the prograin chairman has high hopes in the beginning. It is a pleasure to report, the success of this particular symposium because it proves that with organization and cooperation of authors and reviewers fast publication is possible which serves the interests of both reader and author.
