Review Papers

T

he special review issues each April, alternating between fundamental and applied reviews, have become a well established and appreciated feature of ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY. Written by recognized authorities in various methodological specialties or in fields of application of analytical methods, the articles have served as a set of biennial progress reports that have proved valuable for established workers to keep up with their fields and for new entrants into the various specialties. We have every intention of keeping these review series going, of course adding and subtracting specialties as changes in their activity appear to warrant. I n addition to these featurw, articles in the A pages, particularly Reports for Analytical Chemists and the Instrumentation articles, constitute reviews on subjects of interest t o analytical chemists. The Reports generally are written in a more popular style than research papers, and serve to give general background for nonspecialists. Instrumentation articles are usually a t an intermediate technical level between research articles and general interest features. While A page material is abstracted, it is often not bound permanently with research material in chemical libraries. Occasionally, there appears t o be a review paper that fits none of these categories. If it describes a subject that is not appropriate for periodic review, and makes a substantive contribution by integrating, evaluating, or correlating past research, then it appears appropriate to include such a review in the technical section of the journal. An example of such an article appears on page 93 of the current issue. While it is not intended that review articles shall become a regular feature in the technical section, neither should they be arbitrarily excluded just because they deal with new evaluations of past data rather than presentation of new data.
