Scientific Communications ten years ago the July editorial announced a nen- venture -4section for “Communications“ was set up. Thib n-as later called Scientific Communications. This was t o provide a place where authors could present preliminary results on new analytical developments of either fundamental or practical nature As the editorial of July 1948 pointed out, the new publication outlet would permit publication of initial results of important research before exhaustiye study made a complete and detailed article possible. It is strictly coincidental that xye are editorializing on scientific communications just ten years later. but the timing makes a backn-ard glance all the more fitting before we look ahead. We find that after a slow start the Scientific Communications section has been used consistently. but not, in our opinion, excessively. All contributions have gone through the regular review system before acceptance. We believe the communications published have been of real value, although we have not prepared case histories to prove the point. Perhaps that should be done for another anniversary. On this anniversary we want to remind our readers that they still have a place to report on important research Tyhich for one reason or another has not been carried to such completion as to narrant a full article. Our primary purpose, holyever, is to call attention to the fact that this section can accept for immediate, or almost immediate publication, brief announcements concerning important new analytical developments on which a complete report is already in preparation Xuthois. we find. do not understand that such brief announcements are suitable and proper for this section. After acceptance, such announcements will appear in the first available issue. Two such appeared, in our June issue, both published less than 30 days after acceptance. Up to the present some authors have felt t h a t they have had to submit their priority type announcements elsewhere. Sometimes such announcement< hare taken the substance of the complete paper to the extent that the latter could not be accepted for ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY. More often they have had the nuisance value of sending our readers to two journals when one should have sufficed. The editor realizes t h a t he and his associates have a challenging responzibility in publishing these priority type announcements n-hose scientific merits are often difficult to evaluate. Authors, too, have a greater responsibility as they must be sure that reasons for immediate publication are definite and convincing. XACTLT
