The Analytical Division Fellowship Program Over ten years have passed since the last editorial mention of the ACS Analytical Division fellowships [Anal. Chem., 39,697 (1967)l. I t is not entirely coincidental t h a t the program was initiated in 1966, the same year t h a t the editorship changed hands. From a modest beginning of two summer fellowships in the first year, the program has grown to three full-year and seven summer fellowships in 1977. I t is particularly gratifying that industrial sponsorship has been gradually strengthened, because one of the initial objectives of the program was to replace the Merck Analytical Fellowships which were awarded on a nationally competitive basis from 1949 to 1957. T h e Fellowship Committee of the Division, which consists of industrial as well as academic scientists, is charged with the responsibility of receiving applications and judging their merit. Although an impressive group of applications is received each year, more students should be encouraged to apply, and to re-apply if still eligible and unsuccessful in the first attempt. For details, see page 1223A, this issue. This is particularly true because of the prospects of increasing available funds from industrial sponsors as well as through the sale of the book “A History of Analytical Chemistry” which was recently published by the Division. Although the benefits of the fellowship program to the profession and the student recipients are apparent, the benefits to industrial sponsors should also be emphasized. Each recipient of a full-year fellowship is required t o visit the fi-m that sponsored the fellowship. There is no commitment on the part of donor or recipient t o future employment, but the visitations have in fact led to such a result T h e Analytical Division is the only ACS Division sponsoring fellowships on a national scale, and it can be proud of an outstandingly successful program.
