The l i s t of Order ONE

OF THE EDITORIAL CHORES each month is t o prepare the List of Order of papers for the next month’s issue. To many there may not appear to be much order, and this has been true until fairly recently. Suggestions have been made from time to time, the most persistent of which requests that the Journal be divided in sections such as chromatography, infrared spectrometry, or polarography. Practically, this is not too feasible because the number of papers in categories varies so widely, and on occasion none appear in a particular month. Another plan would split the issue into two parts labeled “Fundamental” and “Applied.” This gives less flexibility in scheduling and requires judgment as to the category in which the paper should appear. There is considerable overlap between the two areas, and there certainly is room for argument concerning what constitutes a fundamental paper versus an applied one. I n general this is not too difficult, if one agrees that fundamental papers deal with new and broad concepts in analysis, while applied papers deal with variations of known methods for the analysis of new materials. Since August we have followed a modified form of this second plan. We feel that analytical chemists should read both fundamental and applied papers if they are to be successful in solving their problems. It is with this thought in mind that we have for some time been grouping papers according to technique and method, although we have not labeled the sections. It has seemed logical that the chromatographer is interested in seeing all the chromatography papers together. As some of you may have noticed, in recent issues papers have been listed according to technique and split as t o whether they are fundamental or applied. We should appreciate learning our readers’ views. We shall, of course, discuss this a t our next Advisory Board meeting in April. The list below shows how the papers have been separated.
