NEW BOOKS that they can be pasted on punched cards. Under each curve the following information is given: source, struc tural formula, method used in obtain ing the curve, and often there are men tioned uses for the tenside. Intensi ties of absorption bands are classified according to functional groups and pre sented in eight charts. Die Terpene. Sammlung der Spektren und Physikalischen Konstanten. Teil I. Sesquiterpene. J.

Pliva, M. Horak, V. Herout, and F. Sorm. 228 pages. Akademie Ver-

lag, Leipziger Strasse 3-4, Berlin W.l. Germany. 1960. No price listed. This is a collection of 228 infrared spectra and physical constants of nat urally occurring terpene compounds, their derivatives, hydrogenated and dehydrogenated compounds, as well as of various synthetic models. The present work is the outcome of extensive and systematic investigations carried out by the authors on terpene compounds for more than 12 years at the Chemi cal Institute of the Czech Academy of

Sciences, Prague. A 22-page booklet accompanies the spectra which are printed on individual loose sheets and kept in a box to facilitate their rear rangement as well as addition of new printed spectra. Each infrared curve entry supplies the following data: common name, empirical and structural formulas, physical constants (density, refractive index, specific optical rotation, boiling or melting point in ° C ) , laboratory where the compound was prepared, with the name of the chemist who had prepared or purified it, literature refer ences in which the preparation and structure of the compound are re ported, and the experimental condi tions under which the infrared spec trum w7as obtained. The booklet gives information on the origin of the project, the experimental work carried out, and theoretical back ground material needed to effectively use the physical data presented on the sheets. Actual laboratory application showing Sargent Con stant Rate Burette with Magnetic Stirrer, pH RE CORDING ADAPTER, and Model SR Recorder.

For Recording pH

SAR6ENT pH RECORDING ADAPTER OFFERS • HIGH SENSITIVITY 1 millivolt per pH unit

• EXCELLENT STABILITY Drift less than 0.01 pH/hour

« FLEXIBILITY Output adjustable to give full scale recorder deflection for 1 to 14 pH

• LOW COST

Extreme resistance in electrode or solution is completely compatible with Sargent or other high quality potentiometric recorders through this new instrument, which transmits potential without distortion but converts impedance to lower values. An electrometer circuit—stable, linear and of high resistance—provides smooth, non-interrupted conversion with output at maximum sensitivity approxi mately 1 millivolt per pH unit. Adjustable sensitivity and variable displacement give flexibility in setting pH range of the recorder. Accommodates standard commercial glass and reference electrodes. For pH titration, the Sargent Constant Rate Burettes, which may be synchron ously driven from Sargent Recorders, are useful adjuncts. S-72172 pH ADAPTER-Sargent Recorder. Without electrodes $140.00 Designed and Manufactured by Ε. Η. Sargent &. Co. Write for Bulletin RA

J.

Ramirez-Munoz and G. SalcedoEscobar. 348 pages. Paper cover. Universidad Industrial de Santander, Bucaramanga, Colombia, South America. 1961. This paper-covered manual, printed in Spanish, is intended to assist students of analytical chemistry in their practical laboratory work. It has work sheets included to serve as a record of labora tory work done and results obtained. It is divided into seven parts: gen eral instructions, special apparatus and equipment, analytical procedures, lab oratory work sheets, practical problems, preparation of solutions, and safety measures. An appendix is included. Analisi e Preparazione dei Mineral!. Bibliografia Internazionale Scientifico-Tecnica. 124 pages. Paper cover. Centro di Studi per la Prepparazione dei Minerali, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, 1960. Via dei Monti di Piertralata, 83, Rome, Italy. I960. This Italian paperback publication provides in abstract form recent work done in various fields of mineral prep arations and treatments. It includes 20 pages of abstracts (approximately 86 abstracts) relating to the analysis of minerals. Test Methods. Pulverized Limestone Association, 325 Delaware Ave., Buf falo 2, Ν. Υ. 1962. No price indi cated. This brochure covers the sieve analy sis of 325-mesh pulverized limestone, Circle No. 66 on Readers' Service Card
