MAXIMUM UTILIZATION OF RADIANT TRANSMISSION INCREASES SPEED OF ANALYSIS Heats from room t e m p e r a t u r e to 700" C. in approximately seven minutes. Cools from 750° C. to room t e m p e r a t u r e in approximately t e n minutes. T h e automatic drive and programming device for the sample b u r n i n g furnace allow the operator to devote his attention to t h e preparation of a second sample during the period of b u r n i n g the first. No ceramic cores o r insulating materials are used—power consumption is almost half t h a t of conventional micro furnaces. This a p p a r a t u s has been developed in consultation with micro chemical laboratories in which a large volume of elementary analysis is performed and w h e r e time is a n important factor. The Sargent Combustion Apparatus is being employed with great success for halogen a n d sulphur as well as for nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen. The compact u n i t is installed in a metal case 24 inches long, 12 inches wide and 6% inches high, with an a l u m i n u m top panel o n which furnaces and controls a r e mounted. Quickly replaceable heating units are heavy gauge chromel wire.

When furnaces a r e adjacent and adjusted to the same temperature, t h e internal tube temperature is uniform throughout the length of both furnaces. Length of long furnace, 7 inches; length of moving f u r nace, 2 inches; approximate m a x i m u m length of travel of moving furnace, 7 inches; m a x i m u m size of combustion t u b e accommodated, 14 millimeters O.D.; alternative rates of travel of moving furnace, 4 millimeters per minute and 12 p e r minute, respectively; m a x i m u m static time interval accommodated, 15 minutes; m a x i m u m operating t e m p e r a ture of furnaces, over 850 degrees centigrade; m a x i m u m power consumption of long furnace, 275 watts; m a x i m u m power consumption of moving furnace, 175 watts; m a x i m u m power consumption of complete unit, 600 watts. S-21580 COMBUSTION APPARATUS—Micro and SemiMicro, Semi-Automatic, Programming, Sargent. Complete with removable mortar, two furnaces and cord and plug for attachment to standard outlets, but without glassware or thermometer, for operation from 115 volt 60 cycle A.C. circuits $500.00
