sional societies, on a subscription basis. Early in 1963 the operation of the Metals Documentation Service was transferred from the WRU Center to the American Society for Metals (ASM) at Novelty, Ohio. ASM has assumed responsibility for materials acquisition and selec tion, abstracting, editing, coding, question programming, evaluation, and various related clerical tasks. The WRU Center for Documenta tion and Communication Research with its tabulating and computer facilities will· continue to act in a service capacity in processing searches. The WRU Center has received an award of $138,000 from the Na tional Institutes of Health to estab lish a "Facility for Health Sciences Documentation Research." The Center will apply its techniques to the language of medicine, and the new facility will include a labora tory equipped to compare and eval uate nonconventional library sys tems. The project will absorb and expand present medical documenta tion studies with the cooperation of the WRU School of Medicine fac ulty. It marks a change in direc tion of the WRU Documentation Center toward greatly expanded ac tivity in the health sciences which is expected to represent one half of the Center's prograEi by 1967. Chemical Abstracts Service. The information storage and retrieval research performed by the Amer ican Chemical Society's Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) is well known by scientists in this country. CAS at Columbus, Ohio, has been working for several years on stor age and machine retrieval of chem ical information with support from the National Science Foundation. For this work a modified IBM 1401 computer which has a 1403 printout in 120 characters has been installed and put into operation. It uses the CAS Character Set (Model 1) in which uppercase and lowercase letters; normal, subscript, and su perscript numerals ; and some Greek and italic letters are available, to gether with a wide range of conven tional scientific signs such as brack ets, parentheses, plus, degree, and equals. Any character or group of characters can be underlined. This
