The reaction of more than 1 mole of maleic anhydride with unsaturated fatty acids and esters at elevated temperatures (maleinization) was investigated. phenomenon

of an apparent

The previously

observed

loss in acid content

during

maleinization with concurrent elimination of a nonequivalent amount of carbon dioxide was interpreted

as largely

moieties, leading to the formation of spirodilactone group ings. The maleinization reaction sequence was studied

by

IR using model systems and then correlated with carbon dioxide generation during maleinization of commercial fatty acid mixtures.
