SyST&m FLEXIBILITY IN ŒRO/T\ATOGRAPW EM Laboratories, Inc.

EM Laboratories, Inc., associate of E. Merck, Darmstadt, Germany, manufactures a complete system of products for thin layer, column, process, and high performance liquid chromatography. As the source of supply for a unified program of chromatographic products, we can provide—beyond uniform quality and reproducible results—an important additional advantage to the chromatographer:

TLC Within The System

EM

Concept

TLC provides an excellent introduction tc the System Concept. EM's pre-coated materials offer not only unmatched quality and reproducibility, but these other im portant characteristics, as well : • Coatings of virtually all commonly usee sorbents guaranteed free of defects. Tht wide range of layer thicknesses that w« offer makes our plates suitable for an alytical as well as preparative work.

Chromatography EM Laboratories controls the entire manufacturing process; all our sorbents have a common source. They share not only fundamental chromatographic properties, but also such significant characteristics as partition and permeation.

W h a t This Means to the Chromatographer Depending upon his needs, the chromatographer can switch from TLC to column chromatography, to prepacked columns for HPLC, and to bulk sorbents for process chromatography without retracing steps with each change of chromatographic technique. A laboratory may be currently limited to TLC; however, the EM System Concept provides the potential for simple transition to more sophisticated methods. No matter what your requirements—from a small quantity of sorbents to coat TLC plates, through a full program of pre-coated plates, prepacked columns, packings for high performance liquid chromatography, to sorbents in bulk for process chromatography—there is an EM product that has the chromatographic characteristics you require and is an integral part of the EM System Concept.

Sorbents Within The System

Concept

EM manufactures a comprehensive line of sorbents for TLC, PLC, CC, HPLC, GPC, Industrial Process Chromatography,

etc. Only the supplier of such a range of products can be sensitive to the chromatographer's diverse requirements. Based upon our knowledge and experience, technical progress in one chromatographic field can be rapidly applied to the entire system. Sophisticated manufacturing methods ensure that all EM sorbents possess: • Narrow and well defined particle size distribution • Controlled pore size and pore volume • Specific and graded surface area • Standardized activity for various applications • Superior batch to batch reproducibility • Highest specificity and resolution capability • Largest sample capacity

Three backings—glass, the prime choice for unsurpassed sample resolution due to layer flatness and rigidity—aluminum and plastic for flexibility and ease of recovering sample components of interest for subsequent analysis. Inert binder that is effective in very low concentration. This provides excellent layer hardness and durability and per-

ing advantages of standardized physical and chromatographic properties, e.g., nar row particle size distribution, controlled pore size, and batch-to-batch reproduci bility. Several of these sorbents are used for our unique LOBAR™ Pre-packed Columns. These columns provide the excellent reso lution capability of modern HPLC, but their high permeability allows large flow rates under moderate hydrostatic or pump pressure.

mits shipping, spotting, development, stacking, and storage without layer damage. • Standardization of properties from plate-to-plate and lot-to-lot world wide. Once a sorbent-solvent combination has been chosen, results will be uniform from lab to lab and applicable to other forms of the same sorbent. The uniformity, homogeneity and chro matographic properties of EM pre-coated materials have established new standards Df quality and versatility for thin layer ;hromatography.

HPLC Within The System

Concept

EM Laboratories' program embraces a new approach to High Performance Liquid Chromatography. HPLC offers improved resolution and separation capa bility compared with conventional open column chromatography. EM offers two parallel options—low pressure (LOBAR) and high pressure (HIBAR). Now the chemist can combine the speed and reso lution of modern HPLC with simplicity, economy, and large sample capacity. Again, it is the System Concept that en ables the chromatographer to set his own priorities and shift from a simple low pressure system for R & D applications to a micro-particulate sorbent under high pressure when a large number of samples must be analyzed rapidly. The same sor bent-solvent combination used for TLC is also optimum for HPLC. Silica Gels, derivatized Gels, Aluminas, and Polymeric Gels for process (bulk) chromatography have the same outstand-

Among the advantages of LOBAR Col umns are: " Large sample capacity—ideal for pre parative HPLC • Optimum sample distribution—unique inlet design • High reproducibility ensured by auto mated packing techniques • Simplicity and economy—can be oper ated by the laboratory technician • Visual control of procedure—glass column • Option of arrangement in parallel for larger capacity or in series for improved resolution The EM System Concept includes a range of sorbents for high pressure liquid chro matography. These sorbents are designed to withstand high pressure and to provide high flow rate and resolution even when densely packed : • LICHROSORB®: totally porous, irreg ular shape particles of small pore vol ume for adsorption, or larger pore volume for partition chromatography. » L I C H R O S P H E R ™ : totally porous, spherical shape particles with a large range of pore volumes and surfaces for adsorption or partition chromatography as well as GPC. • PERISORB®: porous layer beads, for HPLC at maximum speed. Within the EM System Concept there is an HPLC module for the specific needs of any laboratory.

Other Products Within The System

Concept

In addition to the broad line of sorbents and ready-to-use chromatographic sup plies, EM Laboratories also provides: • Aerosol detection sprays for TLC • Chromatographic reference standards • Basic accessories for chromatography • The TEMPLATE"—for TLC
