Maurice Stansby wins President's award Maurice E. Stansby, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, Seattle, has received the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service. He was cited for "the development of new knowledge concerning the nutritional value of fish oil and its potential in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease." The award consists of a gold medal and is the highest honor that can be bestowed for civilian service in the U.S. It was presented to Stansby in a special ceremony on March 7 in Washington, D.C. Stansby's federal career began in the 1930s, and although he retired in 1975 after 44 years of service, he continues to conduct research on a voluntary basis at NOAA's Northwest & Alaska Fisheries Center. He spent most of his career at National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA) laboratories. In the late 1950s, during his tenure as director of the Fish & Wildlife Service's Technological Laboratory, Seattle, he began a program of fish oil research. His efforts added to the knowledge that certain polyunsaturated fatty acids in fish oil lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. From 1967 until his retirement, Stansby concentrated on developing an understanding of the chemistry and biochemistry of polyunsaturated fatty acids and their metabolic pathways in marine animals and humans.
