The first position involves research on the sorption chemistry of U on natural mineral or organo-mineral sorbents (i.e., Fe-AI oxides, layer silicates, alumino-silicates) isolated from subsurface materials. The research will be mechanistic in emphasis with focus on the effects of organic acid complexants or humic substances on the surface exchange or surface complexation of U in absence and presence of other competitive sorbates. Flexibility exists to investigate either the thermodynamic or kinetic aspects of U/co-contaminant sorption chemistry using microcalorimetry or various spectroscopies. An academic background is needed in clay mineralogy, soil chemistry or geochemistry, environmental engineering, or surface chemistry. Experience in the use of aqueous speciation/solubility and surface complexation models is desired. The second position involves the design, performance, and interpretation of contaminant transport experiments in a U.S. Department of Energy sponsored subsurface environmental research facility (SERF). The post-doctoral project will focus on geochemical transport experiments with U and Co and their organicallycomplexed forms in meter scale laboratory flow cells containing hetergeneities in physical, aqueous chemical/ minéralogie, or microbiologic properties. The successful candidate must have strong background in soil chemistry/ soil physics, geochemistry, and/or geohydrology; appreciation for the influence of water flow and heterogeneity on reactive species transport; and documented experience in the performance of contaminant transport experiments in columns or flow cells. Experience in the application of coupled chemical reaction/water mass transport models is highly desired, but not required. The two positions will become available in December 1991. Candidates must have U.S. citizenship. Please submit resumes to Dr. John M. Zachara (509) 375-2993 or Dr. Ellyn M.
