BOOKS Continued from page 27 alcohols as vehicular fuels or from a full evaluation of their shortcomings. When it comes to a summary of costbenefit analysis, they mention that public safety issues engendered by methanol's toxicity are not a hindrance "assuming that adequate safety practic es [are] followed/' However, the au thors omit a very important drawback of these fuels: lower energy per gallon, which translates to a shorter cruise range than gasoline affords before refu eling. In the article on "Antiaging Agents," a number of hypotheses as to the cause of human aging are addressed, including zinc deficiency, oxidants, free radicals, crosslinking, and hormone deficiencies and their effects on the immune system. Alas, no convincing clinical data are yet available that point to effective pharma cological intervention in the aging pro cess. Perhaps an understanding of this process at the molecular level may lead to a formulation of effective antiaging agents.

Volume II ends at "Antibiotics," and I am looking forward to reading about buckyballs, catalytic converters, chlorofluorocarbons and their substitutes, diamond films, ecology, fine chemicals, reformulated gasoline, and so on. I will be quoting this encyclopedia for my classes in chemical engineering, for my consulting in industry, and for writing National Science Foundation propos als. I hope to see a few more academic

authors. On controversial topics, I would play it safe and consult a few of the references in the bibliography. This is still the best reference of its kind in the English language, and the starting point for many intellectual journeys.
