Ihdiistrial News Plant t o B e C o n s t r u c t e d for S o d i u m Chlorate Manufacture

T

o M E E T the increasing demand for sodium chlorate in the fight to control noxious weeds that are costing American farmers an estimated three billions a year, the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Co., of Philadelphia, and the Chipman Chemi cal Co., Inc., of Bound Brook, N . J., have become associated in the production and distribution, respectively, of the weedkilling chemical. Const ruction of a plant for sodium chlo rate manufacture will begin shortly on a site near Bonneville Dam in Oregon. This was selected because of its close proximity to Bonneville Dam, which will supply low-cost electric power. Tidewater facili ties make both water and rail transporta tion available. Electrode for Welding w i t h S m a l l A. C. Transformer Welders

A

N E W mild steel arc-welding electrode, designed particularly for use with small alternating current transformer type arc welders, which is said to simplify weld ing with this type of equipment and pro vide weld metal of high quality, is an nounced by The Lincoln Electric Co., Cleveland, Ohio. Transweld has a very heavy extruded coating and a very stable arc, easv to strike and hold. Weld metal produced by the electrode possesses high physical properties. Ten sile strength is 75,000 to 85,000 lb. per sq. in., yield point 60,000 to 68,000 lb. per sq. in., and ductility 20 to 3 0 per cent elongation in 2 inches. Union Carbide P l a n t near TVA D a m

T

HE Electro Metallurgical Co., a sub sidiary of the Union Carbide & Carbon Corp., has purchased 299 acres on the Tennessee River, near Wilson Dam, Ala., as the site of a plant for the production of calcium carbide, ferro-alloys, and other electric furnace products. Construction is expected to start during February. The eventual cost will be about $5,000,000. Specially B u i l t Tank Cars

S

PECIALLY constructed tank cars now in use by the Continental Carbon Co., Sun ray, Texas, are loaded a t the top and equipped with special hoppers a t the bottom through which the black is re leased into conveyors at the customer's plant. Sealed openings at the side provide easy access for sampling the contents. These cars are not only more convenient but cleaner and more economical.
