ENCOURAGING AMERICANS TO SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES THROUGH FINANCIAL DONATIONS

Our nation’s tax system has strongly encouraged Americans to make financial donations to organizations that serve their communities, including professional communities, through tax deductions for contributions to tax-exempt organizations. Within the science and engineering community, the actions of not-for-profit organizations and their members strengthen science education, diversity in the science and engineering community, public understanding of science, and sustainable use of our natural resources. Each of these outcomes benefits the country and its citizens. The American Chemical Society believes that Congress and the administration should • •

Continue to support itemized deductions for charitable contributions and not eliminate them or limit their effectiveness. Support permanent extension of the IRA (individual retirement account) charitable rollover provisions that allow older taxpayers to donate directly from retirement accounts.

The American Chemical Society is a non-profit scientific and educational organization, chartered by Congress, with more than 158,000 chemical scientists and engineers as members. The world’s largest scientific society, ACS advances the chemical enterprise, increases public awareness of chemistry, and brings its expertise to state and national matters.
