EQUIPMENT Pilot Plant Processes Synthetic Resins A synthetic resin pilot plant that is used for organic reactions as well as synthetic resins has been developed by Brighton Copper Works. Made of type 316 stainless, unit is fundamentally a 10-gal. capacity reaction kettle, primary reflex condenser, secondary tubular condenser, and a decanter and receiver.
Kettle has a variable speed agitator, cooling unit and charge hole. Decanter is designed to separate both heavier and lighter than water liquids. Decanted liquid can be directed to kettle as reflux or to the receiver as desired.
An electronic controller regulates the heaters from the kettle temperature. Model A-110-A is for vacuum to 100 lb./sq. in. A I lodel A-110 is also available with borosilicate glass decanter and is for vacuum to 40 lb./sq. in. E 2

Electrophoresis Unit M a k e s up t o 10 Analyses Simultaneously
Pumps, type C and type F b y National Carbon, offers the chemical industry two new Karbate Impervious Graphite centrifugal units. Common applications are for handling of salt brines and sea water—in short, all pumping conditions that are corrosive to ordinary iron and steel. Type C centrifugal pump, a heavy duty model, is available in three sizes, having discharge openings of 2 in.. 3 in., and 4 in., with either 10-in. or 8-in. impellers. All major pump parts, except the volute case, suction cover flange, and impeller assembly are interchangeable. Type F has a motormounted design and is for applications which require convenience, compactness and low cost of a close-coupled pump with operating and maintenance features of a frame mounted unit. Pump advantages are capacities from five to 1500 g.p.m. at discharge pressures up to 1000 lb./sq. ft., mechanical seal with enclosed coolant, and pump efficiencies to 600' . E3
Microchemical Specialties paper electrophoresis unit for separation, identification, and quantitative determination in such complex systems as mixtures of amino acids, lipids, steroids, carbohydrates, and proteins. Up to 10 analyses can be made simultaneously. Buffer cells and tray for supporting filter paper are made of clear plastic. One stainless steel and one carbon rod are used as electrodes in the buffer cells E6

tion from the Epiradiator. Energy is absorbed by the surface layer, thereby producing evaporation while remainder of the liquid and the vessel itself remain cold. Vessel is of fused silica, is moistureproof and acid resistant. Unit is available in four sizes for operation on 110 or 220 volts E1
^ Diaphragm pump, by W. S. Rockwell, has simple design for pumping cuemicai anu ceramic uuivxs, an«a otper products difficult to handle and quickly destructive to the working parts of ordinary pumps. There is no contact between the pumping mechanism and the fluid handled, since the chambers for each are separated by a rubber diaphragm. Entire simple working assembly consists of a diaphragm, connecting rod, and crankshaft. Capacities are 250, 350, and 450 gal./hr.; for total suction lifts to 25 ft. E4 ^ Rings, Kel-F Raschig and perforated Kel-F disks for packing support, designed by United States Gasket. Discs are available in thicknesses up to one in. and over. Raschig rings can be reclaimed or recycled by use of any inorganic material or acid. E5 ^ Ultrasonic probes by Branson Instruments are a series of 0.5-in. diameter crystal transducers for ultrasonic thickness gaging for use with company's Audiagage thickness testers. Small diameter of the type B transducers makes possible precise thickness meas-

urements. Units employ both quartz and barium-titanate ceramic as active elements and have a sensitivity approximately equal to that of the conventional l 3 / 8 - i n . diameter all-quartz probes. E7 ^ Mount v a l v e s by Versa Products need no pipe or hose connections and are available in 2-, 3-, and 4-wav types of V 8 , V 4 . 3 /«, or i/ 2 N P T size.' E8 ^.Quantity Calculator, for coal tar base enamels by Reilly Tar & Chemical, has been revised. Calculator gives estimates for quantities of enamel required in lb./1000 ft. and gal./mile on two grades of Primer. It also gives estimates for coupling compounds required for mechanical couplings on pipe of normal size from 2 in. through 4 8 in. Tables of recommended temperatures of application for enamel are given and estimates for drying time on Primer are tabulated. E9 ^ Midget v a l v e s , solenoid, and no larger than two packs of cigarettes (regular size) has been developed by General Controls. Series of magnetic stop valves is designed for use with all types of gases and fluids. Valves operate in any position and feature positive shut-off, low current consumption, optional time-delay, and adjustable by-pass and main flow. E 10 Fittings, type LPR by Emsco Mfg., are low pressure joints for schedule 4 0 pipe. Fittings are designed for a maximum pressure of 1000 l b . / s q . in. at a maximum temperature of 225° F. Other types are available for pressures np to 15,000 lb./sq. in. and temperatures to 7 5 0 ° F. Ell For further information on oJny Item mentioned here, see coupon on page 5238 AND
