EQUIPMENT tains to protect against overspray and aeration. Tanks are constructed of V i e steel plate with reinforced bottoms and hold 600 to 1O00 gal. of solution. Pump, leading to the spray headers, is rated to handle liquids at elevated temperatures of 160° t o 180° F . Either steam or gas may be used for heating the solution. Steam units operate on pressures from 5 0 to 125 lb.; radiation is assured b y use of multiple pass steam coils. Units designed for natural or manufactured gas operate on pressures from 2 to 16 oz.
Valve engineer inspects a valve display in the Edward Valvemobile, a mobile valve school. With tour to Southwest complete, Atlantic Coast states are next on agenda Mobile Valve School Tours Southwest, Atlantic Coast Next For customers who find it inconvenient to visit the Edward Valves plant in East Chicago, company is bringing a typical valve laboratory to them. Called the Edward Valvemobile (valve lab on wheels), unit has recently returned from a 500-mile tour in the Southwest where it visited 112 installations during its initial three-month period. Company plans to conduct tours into the northeastern and Atlantic Coast states. Company is conducting a regular school aboard t h e Valvemobile. Customers and users showed much interest in the different displays depending on their particular installation, said W. A. Oweiss, Edward Valve engineer and Valvemobile lecturer during the introductory trip. All visitors seemed especially interested in the Pressure-Sea! display which gives them a chance to build a Pressure-Seal valve on a stainless steel panel with differently colored, magnetized wooden replicas of each part, Oweiss continued. Another popular phase of each visit is the question and answer period when valve users discuss with the valve engineer personal valve problems and how to solve them. In addition to tips on installing, operating, and servicing steel valves, the Valvemobile shows pictures of typical installations using steel valves and a color-slide tour of the Edward plant in East Chicago. Valvemobile is the result of over two years planning and took over eight months to build. W. F. Crawford, 3464
president of Edward Valves, says, "We have long felt the desire to have all our customers visit our plant and to see our laboratories which are the largest in the world devoted to the research and development of steel valves exclusively. However, we realized that for most a trip to East Chicago was very unlikely, so in miniature, w e will bring Edward to them." Edward representatives are informed as to the dates they can expect the Valvemobile to visit in their respective areas so they can plan an itinerary for a maximum number of visits in the allowed time. E1 One-to-Multistage Washer C a n Be Combined on Premises A monorail-type spray washer, which can b e used as a single unit or combined on the premises into a multistage washer to suit the needs of the user without expensive alterations or assembly problems, has been designed by Detrex. Units can be assembled on the premises, either by bolting or welding, and offer a wide variety of combinations. A range of sizes from a spray length of 4 ft. up through 10 ft. in two-foot steps is available. Each washer unit, set up for gasketing, will accommodate work up to 30 in. v/ide. Removable baffles reduce width where operating economy calls for a narrower opening. Seven different heights are available in the washer openings: from 24 in. upward in 6-in. steps to a maximum height of 60 in. User can also vary the silhouette with synthetic rubber cur-
Washer design eliminates most of the work of cleanup and maintenance, company says. Tank skirts extend flush to the floor with no ledges or platforms to accumulate dirt. Ninety per cent of the tank bottom of steam machines can be reached with a hoe, and gas immersion coils are also spaced to provide ease of scraping and hoeing. Washers are designed for use of phosphate coatings of the iron-phosphate type. Washers for zinc-iron-phosphate use will b e available shortly according t o Detrex. B2

• Corrugated steel boxes offered by Palmer-Shile will now have lapped ends or sides. Company says this lapped joint is designed to replace butt straps and butt weld joints. Lapped joint will be standard on all round cornered boxes. H 11 k Drum storage unit, called Barl-AWay and offered by Standard Welding & Steel Products, eliminates stacking of drums. Unit has a a inclined bed; drums are unloaded onto this and move forward toward a lowering table. Table has hydraulic release, adjustable to handle drums weighing from 100 to 650 lb., which slowly lowers barrel or drum to delivery table, where it continues the forward movement to a release gate. Gate permits discharge of one drum at a time. Unit is 13-ft. long, 4-ft. wide, and 6-ft. high. Delivery bed height is 5 in. from floor. H 12 >> Crane truck of 6000-lb. capacity has been developed by Elwell-Parker Electric. Designed for transporting loads in confined areas and to reach into normally inaccessible areas, crane has travel speed of 4 m.p.h. without load, 3.5 m.p.h. fully loaded. Crane has swinging action to facilitate handling on either side of travel area. H 13 • Rotary vibrator developed by Viber helps move bulk materials by breaking up arching and jamming in bins, hoppers, chutes, and feeders. Called the AiroViber, unit has but one moving part. Company says it performs at high or low temperatures and does not require lubrication or periodic maintenance. H 14 t Purchase of nitrogen in bulk and delivery in trailers has resulted in considerable time and labor savings at New York Naval Shipyard. Previously procured in standard cylinders, each cylinder had to be lifted aboard ship and connected to manifold for testing operation. Appreciable amounts of nitrogen are used at shipyard in testing hydraulic equipment for shipboard use. Also an approximate loss of 10% occurred when gas was transferred from cylinder to manifold. New method effects saving in this, and hazards involved in handling of supply cylinders are eliminated.
