Dual Analyzer for Gas Streams C a s c a d i n g detectors permit infrared a n a l y z e r to m a k e simultaneous analyses of two components τ ISTON-BECKER has designed a dual in-
•*-' frared analyzer that provides within a single unit continuous analysis for two components in a complex gas stream. The unit is a modification of company's standard model 21 plant stream infrared gas analyzer, and operating principles are basically the same. Dual analysis is obtained in the modi fied unit by cascading two d e t e c t o r s each charged with its sensitizing gas. A single standard amplifier is employed and results are indicated on a multipoint recorder. Printing speeds as fast as 6 seconds may b e employed. Independ ent span and zero controls are pro vided in an auxiliary control unit. In the analyzer, t h e first detector cell has holes all t h e way through it per mitting radiant energy to pass out of the windows in the bottom of first detector. Unabsorbed energy from the first de tector is transmitted to a second de tector which is charged with the second gas. For recording specific analyses for two different gases, a multipoint re corder (print wheel type) with a switch to select the signal from either one or the other detectors is used. Liston-Becker says the dual analyzers are currently being employed for t h e
Monobed Resin Unit Changes Tap W a t e r to Distilled Central Scientific has come u p with a device for rapidly changing ordinary tap water into t h e chemical equiva lent of triple dis tilled water ( in terms of specific resistance) for as little as 10 cents a gallon. Company says advantage of the device is that user can regulate the time of con tact between resin and tap water until he obtains desired chemical equiva lent of single or triple distilled or even higher. The device is called the Quikpure unit and is comprised of a 16 oz. poly ethylene squeeze bottle, the bottom containing a mixture of cation and anion exchange resins. T a p water poured into the bottle comes into im 1720
can be accommodated by one set of jackets and can be interchanged within minutes, company says. Scientific Glass claims that charges from 2 ml. to 72 liters are easily frac tionated; also that standard columns can be supplied with boil-up rates as high as 30 l./hr., depending on diameter of column and packing. The distillation unit can be operated at temperatures up to 350° C. Any available column packing can be supplied—including either metal or glass helices. Company guarantees that any size Dalin column will b e properly packed with any type of helix and will also b e delivered without any settling of the helices. Ε3
• Microscope illuminator, developed by Reichert Optical Works, and avail able through William J. Hacker & Co., Operator records CO and C0 2 measure permits advanced laboratory and re ments from multipoint recorder search work with an ordinary standard microscope. Features of the illumi simultaneous analyses of CO and CO2 nator, called Unilux, is a double lens in combustion studies. In typical analy collector and field iris diaphragm, con ses, ranges of 0 to 10% CO2 and 0 to venient filter slides, built-in centerable 20% CO, are provided. An accuracy mirror, supplementary lens on sliding of 19£ of full scale is available in each mount, and precentered low voltage light source. Ε4 range. Cost and complexity of the dual • High pressure valves, series 34, by analyzer is only slightly greater than Annin, are for pressures u p to 6000 single component instruments resulting in considerable savings in both first cost lb./sq. in. a n d temperatures up to and in maintenance, says company. Ε 1 900° F . Also available is model 34 manually operated. Valves are fur nished in sizes 1/2 in. and 3 / 4 in. Ε 5 mediate contact with t h e resins and is converted to distilled water in about one minute, company says. The c a p of the polyethylene bottle permits user to discharge distilled water from the squeeze bottle but will not allow resins to escape. Resins may be used repeatedly u p to about 25 gal. of water depending upon its hardness. When t h e resins cease t o react, a color change occurs caused b y the presence of a registered food, drug, and cosmetic dye. The monobed resin works by cations being exchanged for hydrogen ions while the anions are exchanged for the hydroxyl ions of t h e resin. • Small centrifugal pump, by Eco, is made of carpenter 20 stainless, for handling a wide variety of corrosive chemicals or for noncontaminating serv ice in food, biological, and similar ap plications. Maximum capacity is 30 g.p.m. Unit will p u m p against a head up to 24 lb. and has a maximum suc tion lift of 20 in. vacuum. Rear suc tion and discharge permit accessibility without disconnecting pump from line, and there is full visibility of fluid be ing pumped through borosilicate front cover plate. Ε6 • Exhaust fans, by Duriron, are said to have metal resistance to corrosive fumes and gases. Casing is of Duriron, and the rotor is a multiblade, forward, curved design of Durimet 20, a high nickel stainless steel. Durco Β series fans are available with capacities to 8000 c.f.m. Company says design and construction make them 4 0 % lighter in weight than former Duriron fans. Ε 7 For further information on any Item mentioned here, see coupon on page 1724 AND

this is one fish story the fish will verify'
Here's dramatic proof of the unique ability of viSQUEEN film as a moisture barrier—able to keep moisture in, and able to keep it out at the same time! Two goldfish lived a healthy, happy life for several weeks in a suspended VISQUEEN bag. It was sealed tightly at the top and opened only for periodic feedings. VISQUEEN literally ' "breathes" so carbon dioxide produced by the fish passed out through the film—and oxygen came in from the outside. Thefishwere as perky the day they came out as the day they went in.
During the entire test not one drop of water leaked out! If your product must retain moisture—or, if it must be kept absolutely dry, you can use VISQUEEN film to excellent advantage. Better see a VISQUEEN converter now.
IMPORTANT! V I S Q U E E N film is al! polyethylene, but not all polyethylene is V I S Q U E E N . VISQUEEN is the only f i l m produced by process of U. S. Patent No. 2 4 6 1 9 7 5 . Only VISQUEEN has the benefit of research and techni cal experience of The Visking Corporation, pioneers in the development of pure polyethylene f i l m .
