Low-Level Detection of Metal Atoms by Multiphoton Ionization in a Low-Pressure Flame Sampling Cell 1010 Metal atoms from solutions aspirated through an air/acetylene analytical burner are sampled through a low-pressure flow cell. Multiphoton ionization by a pulsed dye laser gives estimated detection limits of 20 pptr for Na, 100 pptr for Li, 7 ppb for Ca, and 25 pptr for Cu. Perry R. Blazewicz, William B. Whitten, and J. Michael Ramsey*, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Analytical Chemistry Division, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-6142 Quantitative Analysis of Low Molecular Weight Polar Compounds by Continuous Flow Liquid Secondary Ion Tandem Mass Spectrometry 1013 Successful analysis of MPP+, BMAA, and tryptophan depends on the stability of the film formed by the mobile phase on the probe tip. Factors affecting film stability are discussed. Tao-Chin Lin Wang*, Ming-chuen Shih, and Sanford P. Markey, Laboratory of Clinical Science, National Institute of Mental Health, 9000 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20892 and Mark W. TDMS is used to examine the decomposition (primarily as CO and CO2) of C - 0 functionalities on carbon microfiber surfaces. These functionalities form from the reaction of the fibers with O2 at elevated temperatures. The desorption properties of adsorbed molecules from "dosed" fibers are also reported. Dan T. Fagan and Theodore Kuwana*, Center for Bioanalytical Research, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS 66046 Comparison of Fast Atom Bombardment Mass Spectrometry and Thermal Ionization Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry for the Measurement of Zinc Absorption in Human Nutrition Studies 1023 The two methods give similar precisions (0.5%) for the quantification of 67Zn in enriched fecal samples. The FAB results are 1.9% higher than those obtained by TIMS. John Eagles*, Susan J. Fairweather-Tait, David E. Portwood, and Ron Self, Institute of Food Research, Norwich Laboratory, Colney Lane, Norwich, U.K. and Adolf Gôtz and Klaus G. Heumann, Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, University of Regensburg, Universitatsstrasse 31, D-8400 Regensburg, Federal Republic of Germany Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry with Lithium Ion Attachment to the Molecule 1026 The method provides spectra consisting of quasi-molecular ions (M + Li) + formed by lithium ion attachment to the sample molecules (M) under high pressure. Acetone, used as an example, has a detection limit of ~2.8 X 10 - 1 4 g/s. Toshihiro Fujii*, Miyoshi Ogura, and Hitoshi Jimba, National Institute for Environmental Studies, Tsukuba, Ibaraki 305, Japan
