ESbT-A Journal And a Magazine This issue of Environmental Science b Technology marks the 25th anniversary of the publication which some people call a magazine and some a journal. In fact, over the last two and one-half decades ESbT has established itself as both. The front or “magazine” section has evolved over the years into a periodical that many readers tell us is high on their monthly reading list. We hope that it continues to be so, and that in the future it will be increasingly popular. To ensure this, ACS management is supporting significant changes in the front section: the new design that you see this month; new coverage of domestic and international events on the environmental scene; and special issues such as this one that highlight developments in environmental science, engineering, and policy. With the addition of new staff later this year we hope to see more features and articles that cover the broad contemporary issues of our field. ESbT will also continue to maintain high standards for the research section-the “journal,” if you wish. We are doing so by enlarging our staff of associate editors, honing our system for processing m.anuscripts, and improving the quality of our reviewer data base. We look forward to adopting later this year a new ACS-developed software package for managing manuscript and reviewer files, which we hope will speed up the review process hy another increment. We will also continue to explore with our editorial advisory board the prospects of expanding coverage of the research section. As we enter our second 25 years, we hope that ESbT will continue to be an essential publication in the libraries of institutions and individual scientists throughout the world, and that our readers will assist us in reaching this goal. You can do that by letting us know in what ways the journal or the magazine section can be improved. Please let us hear from you.
