EXPANDING UPON SUCCESS ACS Scholars Program extends its reach
W
ITH A GRANT OF $5 MILLION,
the American Chemical Society made its first awards to ACS Minority Scholars in 1995. Over the past seven years, 360 scholarship recipients have graduated with degrees in the sciences. Now called the ACS Scholars Program, this central activity of the ACS Diversity Programs Department supports academically accomplished African American, Hispanic, and Native American students in their pursuit of undergraduate studies in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, environmental science, and related disciplines in two- and four-year college and university programs. ACS Scholars receive up to $3,000 per academic year. They are expected to maintain high academic standards, and many students find that industry sponsors are interested in hiring them for internships and for fulltime positions after graduation. One such corporation, DuPont, has become a major supporter of the ACS Scholars Program because it is aware of demographic predictions for a shortfall in technically trained personnel in coming years and the projected increase in the minority population. "Developing minority scientists and engineers is the best solution to the shortfall," says W. Christopher Hollinsed, DuPont senior program consultant in strategic technology planning. PPG and other firms, including Astra Zeneca, Bayer, DuPont, GlaxoSmithKline, and Xerox, as well as the Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation, all contributed $100,000 or more to the program. The program's success in producing scholars and the rate at which many go on to graduate study "is an important step in transforming society by increasing the number of scientific and technically trained individuals who can contribute to its continued growth and prosperity," Hollinsed says. Jennifer Tabullo, who was introduced to C&EN readers in 1999 as a senior chemical engineering major at New Mexico State University is nowjennifer Valencia, a review engineer at the Texas Water Development Board in Austin, where she has been working for the past year and a half Valencia was 88

a scholar for five years; she started with the first class of scholars in 1995. Now 24, she plans on continuing her career in chemical engineering by focusing on environmental engineering and environmental health and safety. Later on, she hopes to continue her education and obtain a business degree so that she can move into a leadership position. Valencia tells C&EN she would like to continue working through ACS and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers as a mentor and expects to provide other ACS Scholars with the support and advice they need as they complete their education. Like Valencia, ACS Scholar graduate Francine E. Garrett wants to continue focusing on mentoring. An M.D.-Ph.D. student at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, Garrett also chairs the board of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), the largest medical student organization dedicated to people of color. Garrett spoke to C&EN between meetings and the lab. She is currently working in cell biology As time goes on, she is increasingly learning about administration through SNMA. "I now know that one well-placed person has the ability to influence thousands of people to pursue their goals," she says. When asked about the ways the ACS program had helped her, she noted that the ACS scholarship provided funding that freed her from her athletic commitments at California State University Fullerton, so that she could focus more on academics. Former ACS Scholar Kenolisa C. Onwueme received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Yale University in 1998 and is now enrolled in an M.D.-Ph.D. program at Cornell-Rockefeller Sloan-Kettering's Tri-Institutional Program in New York City. There, he is investigating the role of polyketide natural products in the virulence of mycobacterium tuberculosis, which he describes as "the single most important pathogenic cause of human mortality worldwide." Onwueme says, "Membership in the ACS Scholars Program encouraged me to take my commitment to study organic chemistry even more seriously" He espe-
cially appreciated the financial assistance, exposure to the ACS community, and society publications. Leaslie Rosado attended Rutgers University College of Engineering. She became an ACS Scholar in 1995 and is now a chemical engineer in the technical service group of the Food Products Division of National Starch & Chemical. She was supported all four years as an undergraduate. "Even when I was going through some academic difficulties, the ACS Scholars Program continued its support," she tells C&EN. It "definitely encouraged me to stay in my selected major of chemical engineering," Rosado says. 'ACS is a generous organization that is proactive in attempting to increase minority representation in the sciences," she adds. The ACS Scholars Program manager, RobertJ. Hughes, says the society "expects to award $850,000 to current and new scholars over the next two semesters." Scholarship applications for the 2 0 0 2 - 03 school year will be accepted until March 1.
