New Text THE SULPHUR SHORTAGE Despite an increase in American brimstone pro­ duction t o t w o and one-half times prewar levels, unprece­ dented world demand has created the first sulphur shortage since World W a r I. T h e shortage is due to: • A rise in domestic demand much greater tha n industrial activity • Increased requirements of our allies • Extreme difficulty of finding new brimstone de • H i g h cost o f producing other forms of sulphur T h e American brimstone industry now suppli< world's and 9 0 percent of domestic sulphur. It has expanded facilities, operated plants at capacity, worked new depo.< * intensified the search for others. Moreover, despite tc costs, brimstone prices have advanced only about 25 per over t h e 1935-39 average. T o distribute the supply as fairly and as equitably aj possible, sulphur is being allocated to users here and among our allies abroad. Meanwhile, w e and other members of the brimstone industry are making every effort t o alleviate the shortage. Many projects are under -way to find new deposits, develop new mines and obtain sulphur from other sources.
